A 'Wii' by any other name
Wii. We. Weeeeeeee! Does anyone else feel like urinating?
I can't help but feel that Nintendo is ran by a bunch of managers who are making decisions without getting a professional opinion. How else could you explain following up a purple console with a console named "Wii"? How could they learn from one mistake and then make another so easily. They said they were going to lose the 'kiddy' image but then named their console the sound a child make when on a swing.
Who ever is responsible for marketing has a lot to answer for. Before choosing a name for a console don't they test public response? There is no way a significant number of people would have looked positively on that name. How are news hosts going to be able to say that name without a shmirk on their face. How is anyone going to be able to take Nintendo's console seriously? And for those that say, "It's just a name":
Lisa: His name doesn't matter. "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."
Bart: Not if you called them stench blossoms.
Homer: Or crapweeds.
Marge: I'd sure hate to get a dozen crapweeds for Valentine's Day. I'd rather have candy.
Homer: Not if they were called scumdrops!
To Perrin Kaplan who said that people felt the same about the names 'iPod' and 'Napster' innitially as they do about 'Wii' — Bollocks! 'iPod' was always a catchy name and 'Napster' was named before anyone knew what it was. I don't think she knows anything about marketing despite her title, Vice President of Marketing.
'Wii' looks nice as a symbol. Infact, it could look amazing if Nintendo wasn't ran by marketing bimbos. If you didn't have to pronounce it could be very successful. And I think a quick trip to a linguist would have instantly have had 'Wii' dismissed as a potential name. There a certain words that convey power and prestige purely because of their sound. 'Wii' is not one of them. Without knowing the product, what would you think of when you hear the name 'Wii'? Breakable? Cheap? Disposable?
Will I still buy the Nintendo Wii? Yes. But then I already have an intimate and long standing relationship with Nintendo. Nintendo is trying to attract non-gamers and if someone has no knowledge of consoles and sees one called "PlayStation" and the other called "Wii", which do you think he/she will buy?
Nintendo Wii is going to be the poor kid in the playground who inherited the last name "Kerr" and was then named "Wayne" by his parents.
