Bernard the Loner
I love Bernard Fanning's new song. And whilst it's different to anything I've heard Powderfinger do, I can't understand why he's produced a solo single — or why anyone does. The trend seems to be that when a lead singer goes solo they produce pop music. They go from being an artist to an exercise in mass-marketing. And they still need musicians to play the music so how is it they are now solo? On the other hand we have artists like Jeff Buckley (lest we forget) who saught to leave his solo act in favor of the companionship of a band. I'm sure Bernard Fanning's recent venture isn't the beginning of the end for Powderfinger, but I still have to ask, "why?".
