Do they need to use DRM?

More DRM ranting…

I've already argued that DRM music has no benefits over a standard CD. But it occurred to me today that if people are prepared to pass on free (albeit illegal) DRM-free music from P2P networks in favour of DRM-crippled music, then why do we need DRM at all? If there is any reason to steal music it is to avoid the restrictive nature of DRM. DRM is more likely to encourage piracy than prevent it. Take away DRM and people will still pay for the music they could otherwise obtain for free. There is no way that DRM encourages music sales. So what is the point?

Of course, the point is pretty obvious, and it's not about the record companies protecting their investments.
