'Good Game' does not Represent Me
By pure chance I caught the premier episode of Good Game on ABC2 last night. Good Game is a program by gamers for gamers
– and I think it's safe to say it will be their biggest downfall.
For a half-hour show it was surprisingly light on details about anything.
The review on Saints Row focused on the ability to customise your character, but didn't talk in detail about any of the gameplay or story. It was meant to be good, but I don't know why. They scored it 8 rubber chickens. Rubber chickens? Oh yeah, you guys are in touch.
Their introduction to WoW was loaded with WoW jargon which did nothing to help my understanding and didn't provide any real details on why anyone plays the game (as I would expect with an 'introduction').
They also spent 55 seconds on how to build a PC. Why buy a pre-built PC when the technicalities to building your own can be presented within 1 minute?
Although, I have to admit, I almost enjoyed the video of a Counterstrike game. Having played Counterstrike very briefly myself, I was interested to see a professional teams tactics. But it was edited together very poorly, only showing clips where someone was killed. Why would anyone watch this?
And don't get me started about the yellow, ape puppet.
Good Game has clearly failed to identify it's audience. I consider myself a mild-gamer but there was no content that I found even slightly stimulating. All the content they did have seemed to be focussed towards people who know nothing about gaming, but if they know nothing about gaming then they are probably not interested in gaming and this show.
The annoying thing is that there must be an enormous market for such a show. We hear about the number of people who play games and that the average gamer is over 25 and here's a show whose antics could only stimulate a 13 year old. By gamers for gamers!? Could you imagine how successful The Movie Show would be if it was hosted by the average movie goer with no journalistic experience? Is it that hard to find a journalist who plays games?
And worse still, this show does nothing to improve the image of gamers with the non-gaming world who thinks we all live in dimly lit rooms with our consoles and PC's – like the hosts of Good Game seem to.
