Microsoft Acquires Foldershare

Just this morning I had to manually log into my FolderShare application (a program I use to transfer files between work and home), and noticed a new Microsoft logo at the bottom. My curiosity was satisfied when I found this story about Microsoft acquiring FolderShare to become a part of Windows Live.

One good thing about this is that FolderShare now appears to be totally free. No more nags to upgrade to the commercial version. Which means I think I can access all files on my PC's remotely, instead of just my shared folder. And no more limit on the number of files I can share.

The downside is Microsoft's responsibility to prevent piracy. But this application is different to other P2P applications. Right now I'm sharing files between my home and work PC. It seems to me that I should have every right to share legally acquired copyrighted material with myself. I think it's time the record and movie organisations give it up and let us use our products the way we want and quit bitching.
