Microsoft Keyboard & Winamp

Some time ago I bought a Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard (I'd link to its product info but the Microsoft site makes it impossible to browse on non-IE browsers). I needed a new keyboard because my old keyboard did like having too many keys pressed at once which was causing problems in games like Need For Speed and Grand Theft Auto.

So is it a good keyboard? Not really. It looks OK on the box, but the overall build feels cheap — especially the "zoom" slider. But it does the job and now I can I can press more than 2 keys at once in games.

But why I'm writing is to share how to get the media buttons (Play, stop, next, previous) to work for Winamp 5, since it won't by default and the solution isn't at all obvious. First, you'll need to make sure that Winamp is your default player in the Program Access Defaults (found in Add or Remove Programs). Then in your Winamp preferences (Ctrl + P) under General Preferences > File Types put a tick in the check-box beside Launch Winamp for audio CD's.

And that's it. You don't need to change anything in the IntelliType Pro software (but I have assumed that you have it installed). Note that if you don't want Winamp to launch when you load an Audio CD then you're on your own with finding a different solution.

UPDATE: My bad — the above instructions will only enable Winamp to open when the Play button is pressed. To enable the multimedia buttons to control Winamp you will need to enable Global Hotkeys under General Preferences in Winamp Preferences (Ctrl + P). Thanks, Mungo23.

I think the Digital Media Pro is a great keyboard and doesn't feel cheap at all, I have it myself.

Anyway, another way to get the media keys working for Winamp is to open Winamp->Options->Preferences. Go to General Preferences->Global Hotkeys and tick the enabled button. Winamp controlled goodness from your keyboard mmmmmm!
