Social Music Listening

It's not unusual for me to come in late on these sorts of things, but I just found Last.fm. It's kinda like del.icio.us social bookmarking, but for your music.

You sign up on the website (doesn't require an e-mail address — Yay!) and download the plugin for your chosen music player. The plugin then posts what music you listen to back to the site. It doesn't matter if you don't have a constant Internet connection, it will update when a connection becomes available.

Once it knows your listening habits it will find like minded listeners and suggest music you might enjoy and make it easy for you to discover new music. I find that very exciting.

And like any good service it offers RSS feeds so you can boast your listening habits. Below is an RSS feed of what I've listened to in the last three hours the last ten tracks I've listened to.

For reference, Magpie RSS was used to read the RSS XML so I could dynamically create the above table.

UPDATE: If you know me and have signed up with Last.fm let me know your username so I can add you to my friends list — you do want to be my friend don't you? Also, the Last.fm Player works really well. It allows you to listen to full length tracks of your recommended tunes.

UPDATE 2: Last.fm seems to have changed how RSS feeds can be used, so I've changed to using their rendered image instead.  I've also created a new account —  microUgly.

Use "&lt;" and "&gt;" for "<" and ">". Enclosing PHP code in <code> tags will highlight the code (i.e. <code>&lt;?php echo 'hello world'; ?&gt;</code>).
