What's Hot & What's not (EMI vs Apple)

What's Hot
DRM-free music on iTunes.
What's Not
Having to pay 30% more for it.

Like most people, I'm pretty excited about the inclusion of DRM-free music on iTunes Music Store.  Not because I intend to buy any tracks on iTunes, just because what it means for the future of the industry.

Whilst EMI and Apple have taken a huge step in the right direction by offering much higher quality audio tracks without DRM, it's a pity they had to tarnish the occasion by increasing prices. Apple and EMI are saying it's because they are higher quality (I can't believe normal DRM AAC tracks are only 128kbps - what a joke), but the extra time and processing involved with encoding a track at higher quality would be insignificant.  And I wouldn't expect bandwidth costs to jump by 30%.

256kbps audio is pretty high and does make purchases tempting.  But when you need to convert the tracks to a different format (i.e. AAC to MP3) that's where I would much prefer to spend my money on tracks encoded in a lossless format.
