Wii Sports Pack
I just seen IGN's mention of a Sports Pack for the Wii remote and I remembered I hadn't posted about the ones I have, created by Futuretronics.
I got mine for free as a part of my Nintendo Wii pre-order deal with Target. And since they retail for something like A$40 you might think that getting it for free is a bargain. But the Sport Pack wasn't in stock when I picked up my Wii and I questioned if they were worth coming back to the store to get, despite their value. I was right to question it.
The Futuretronics Sports Pack look pretty similar to the Miyavix ones shown on IGN - the only visual difference is that the Futuretronics bat is shorter and stubbier (which perhaps makes it safer) and the racket is only a frame (no strings). The cradle that holds the Wii remote that the attachments... attach to, is also different and I expect the Miyavix cradle might be easier to insert the remote into
It takes an uncomfortable amount of force to get the remote into the cradle and it is the attachments that holds it in place. You need to apply that force to the remote each time you want to switch sports attachments. I don't like it and I have no doubt the cradle will leave scuff marks on the remote after a short time. But at least it's held firm.
The attachments also blocks the IR camera ont he remote so you can't use it to point at the screen. Since that makes it impossible to start games in Wii Sports, and removing the remote from the cradle is far from quick and easy, it pretty much makes the Sports Pack useless.
The back of the box states a bunch of great marketing points that make it sound like these things actually do something. But they don't at all. It's just asthetics that are difficult to attach and block full functionality of the remote. I will grant that the added weight makes the remote feel nicer to swing, but that added weight will also cause more damage when it slips from you hand. And since you have to remove the lanyard from the remote it's good odds something or someone is going to get hurt.
So, in the end, it's A$40 for something that does absolutely nothing and perhaps only has a doller or two worth of material. It's not even good as a gimmick. If anybody I know wants them, get in touch - they are yours.
