Applying DeviantArt CSS Themes in Opera 9

These instructions describe how to use a CSS theme designed for the DeviantArt website with Opera, although you can apply the same method to any website you want to change the look of. The instructions have been written specifically for Opera 9 Technology Preview 2. I don't think the features described here are available in previous versions.

First, we need to find a theme to apply. This Centralizer theme is a nice one. Click the Download to Desktop link and save the CSS file. For reference, I like to include the domain name in the filename of CSS file, so I named it deviantart.com-centralizer.css and I saved it in my Opera directory under the styles folder (refer to About Opera for the full path to your Opera directory).

Next, open the DeviantArt website in Opera, and right click the page and select Site preferences…. In the 'Site Preferences' dialog box we can customise how the site appears in Opera. Select the 'Styles' tab and choose your saved CSS file from under 'My style sheet'. Then click Ok.

Now open the 'Site Preferences' again and within the 'General' tab change the Site from www.deviantart.com to deviantart.com and click Ok. This is to ensure the theme applies to other areas of the site that begin with something other than 'www', such as members profiles. Note that you cannot perform the previous step and this step at the same time. The current version of Opera will not remember the CSS file you selected if you continue and change the site before clicking Ok.

Finally we need to ensure that Opera will apply your CSS file instead of the sites CSS file. So on the menu bar, click View > Style > Manage modes… and in the 'Presentation mode' dialog, under the 'Author mode' list of options, put a tick beside My style sheet and click Ok.

Now refresh the DeviantArt page and you should see the new theme in action.

If you want to change the CSS file for this domain in the future, open Opera's Preferences (Alt+P) and select the 'Advanced' tab. Select 'Sites' from the left-hand list, highlight 'deviantart.com' from the list of sites and click the Edit button. Now select the 'Style' tab and select your new CSS file. Note that if you right-click the DeviantArt web page and select Site preferences… the domain name will be reset to include 'www' again. This is why I recommend making the changes using Opera's Preferences dialogue.

Rules: Paragraphs and linebreaks are automatically created (two or more linebreaks create a paragraph). Linebreaks between code tags remain linebreaks. Block tags cannot be enclosed by inline tags. Red attributes are required and green is optional.

Use "&lt;" and "&gt;" for "<" and ">". Enclosing PHP code in <code> tags will highlight the code (i.e. <code>&lt;?php echo 'hello world'; ?&gt;</code>).
