Hide Menu Bar
I have no use for the menu bar in Opera. I can access everything I need via buttons, panels and a few key shortcuts. For some reason though, the ability to toggle the menu bar in Opera with a keyboard shortcut is enabled by default for the Unix platform only. This is how to enable the toggling of the menu bar in Windows also.
- Open Opera Preferences (Alt + P) and click the Advanced tab.
- Select Shortcuts from the left hand side and then click Edit… beside Keyboard setup.
- In the Edit Keyboard setup dialog expand the Application section and scroll down the list until you find "Platform Unix, F11 alt" and select it. (Hint: you can sort this list alphabetically by clicking "Input context and shortcuts")
- Click the Edit… button and remove "Platmform Unix," so it now says just "F11 alt" and press enter to apply the change.
- Now Ok you way out and your done.
If you are unable to find this shortcut simply create a new shortcut with the action "Enable menu bar | Disable menu bar".
If you still want to be able to quickly access your menu bar without pressing Alt + F11, you might like to try one of these buttons.

This is the main reason why I didn't want to use Opera over Firefox. That little bit of screen real-estate drove me bonkers.

Thanks that's a great help. Spotted 'Platform MCE' on there too. Have you any idea what that means? Can Opera run on a Media Center Extender?

Rules: Paragraphs and linebreaks are automatically created (two or more linebreaks create a paragraph). Linebreaks between code tags remain linebreaks. Block tags cannot be enclosed by inline tags. Red attributes are required and green is optional.
Use "<" and ">" for "<" and ">". Enclosing PHP code in <code> tags will highlight the code (i.e. <code><?php echo 'hello world'; ?></code>).
List of valid tags:
<blockquote title="" cite=""></blockquote><cite cite="" title=""></cite><a href="" title=""></a><strong title=""></strong><em title=""></em><code title=""></code><abbr title=""></abbr><acronym title=""></acronym><ol title=""></ol><ul title=""></ul><li title=""></li>
